Common Mileage Tracking Mistakes Gig Workers Make

Forgetting to clock out, mixing personal miles, treating miles as a deduction in the app, and why lost years usually cannot be reconstructed.

The expensive mistakes are ordinary: leaving the tracker running through a personal trip, never starting it, treating every odometer mile as a deduction, and assuming you can rebuild last year in March.

GigMeter tries to make the next shift hard to lose: clock in, pause, a reminder after eight hours of work, edit afterward. It cannot invent history you never recorded. Download on the App Store.

Forgetting to clock out

An overnight session dumps personal miles into the total and wrecks hourly rate. Pause or clock out when you are done. GigMeter can send a local lock-screen reminder after eight hours of work if notifications are allowed. Pause cancels it. You can still edit clock-out time later.

Mixing personal miles

Pause for the grocery store. Clock out before the kids’ practice. GPS only runs while the session is live and not paused. If you already mixed them, edit the distance. Do not “fix” it by claiming a tax deduction on miles that were not work. See what counts as work miles.

Thinking the app files the deduction

GigMeter does not apply IRS cents per mile. Optional gas estimates are fuel cost in net, which is a different method than the standard mileage rate. Mixing them on a return without advice is a common way to double-count.

Trusting the gig app as the whole book

Uber’s trip list is not Instacart plus parking plus the unpaid stretch between stores. Log payouts in one place. GigMeter does not import from those apps. What the platforms actually track.

Lost years

If you never kept a log, you usually cannot recreate accurate miles from memory or from a carrier bill. GigMeter will not recover 2024 from the cloud of a company you do not connect to. iCloud only syncs what you already recorded in the app. Export CSV/PDF if you need a copy off the phone. Start the clock on the next shift: setup.
